Description
Underlayment is a necessary component of any laminate flooring or floating engineered hardwood installation. This underlayment is suitable for a wide range of flooring including laminate, bamboo and engineered wood. Hides minor imperfections in the sub-floor, provides a soft cushioned step and absorbs sound when walking on the floor. SoundStepXL is a premium polyethylene foam underlayment choice allowing firm support for multiple types of flooring with good acoustic benefits. Built with sound reduction and moisture dissipation in mind. The standard vapor barrier is specially designed for optimal bond with adhesives for easy installation.
- Pre-attached adhesive strip for quick seam sealing and easy installation; creates a leak proof seal; no additional tape required
- Easy installation - roll out and join seams with built-in lip and tape
- Preferred by flooring installers on any level of home
- Underlayment includes an extra thick plastic moisture barrier film and overlap for excellent moisture protection
- Use for both residential and commercial applications
- Delta IIC Sound Rating of 23
- Delta rating is the best rating to consider when comparing the performance of different types of underlayment
- IIC (Impact Insulation Class) Sound Rating of 74
- IIC is a measure of how much impact sound (walking, kids playing, etc.) is reduced after traveling through the floor covering, underlayment, and building structure and emerging in the room below
- STC (Sound Transmission Class) Sound Rating of 63
- STC is a measure of how much airborne sound (speech, TV, stereo, etc.) is reduced after traveling through the floor covering, underlayment, and building structure and emerging in the room below
- Suitable for use with radiant heat flooring
- Helps eliminate minor subfloor imperfections
- Surpasses building code requirements
- Providing comfortable walking surface with industry compression to protect your chosen flooring system
- Condo, Townhome and Homeowners Association Approved
- Covers 100 sq. ft. - roll size: 4 ft. x 25 ft. x 0.08 in.
- Contractor rolls available in 600 sq. ft.
Installation Instructions
Floating Floors
- Subfloor surface must be clean and dry before installation.
- Start in a corner. Unroll underlayment over subfloor with Film Lip overlapping it down again the subfloor.
- Roll out next row in the same manner butting foam close to first row and covering Edge Seal overlapping lip. Do not overlap foam pad just the Film Lip overlapping.
- Secure the Film Lip overlapping to it. Continue with installation. Seal all open seams with aggressive adhesive plastic tape.
- Install flooring per manufacturers instructions.
Double Glue Down Floors
- Subfloor surface must be clean and dry before installation.
- Roll out underlayment with a vapor barrier side up and butt seams together
- With a utility knife, cut off the overhanging lip/flap before applying adhesive.
- Adhere to subfloor using recommended flooring manufacturer's adhesive and recommended trowel size and isntall method.
- Roll over the underlayment with a 75 or 100 pound roller.
- Adhere flooring over the top using manuacturer's recommended adhesive and trowel size.
* Ensure to read the complete installation instructions before installation

Sound Properties
Impact Sound Transmission
The method is designed to measure the impact sound transmission performance of a floor-ceiling assembly in a controlled laboratory environment.
IIC | Flooring | Sub-floor |
67 | Laminate | over a 6" concrete subfloor with a suspending ceiling |
74 | 8mm WPC | over a 6" concrete subfloor with ceiling assembly |
Sound Transmission Loss
The sound-insulating property of a partition element is express in terms of the sound transmission loss.
STC | Flooring | Sub-floor |
63 | Laminate | over a 6" concrete subfloor with a suspending ceiling |
61 | 8mm WPC | over a 6" concrete subfloor with ceiling assembly |
Delta Test
Tests the impact insulation difference between a bare concrete subfloor with no flooring materials and the same concrete subfloor with flooring and underlayment.

Up to 23 | Soundstep XL under Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) |
Limitations
Soundstep XL is not suitable for use as underlayment for:
- Ceramic Tile
- Sheet-vinyl
- Carpet
- VCT
Installation over concrete in high moisture areas (vapor emission rate above 3 lbs/100 sq ft / 24 rs) will require additional protection such as a concrete or polyethylene vapor barrier.
